Scarce Vintage K Lammi Finnish Horsehead Puukko KnifeOffered for your consideration is an interesting traditional finnish horsehead puukko knife. This knife was made by kustaa lammi, a maker whose knives are seldom seen in the u. S. Kustaa's father, juho is credited with having been the original designer of this classic knife. The firts horsehead pommel was said to have been cast for a cavalry officer in juho's unit. Juho's father was one of the earliest of the kauhava makers adn juho worked closely with iiisakki jarvenpaa, one of finland's most famous (and prolific) makers if you're a knife collector, enthusiast, or just appreciate a high-quality, well-made knife and you haven't had the pleasure of owning a classic finnish knife, you owe it to yourself to have at least one example of these fantastic knives. These knives are almost always of exceptional quality and their performance and durability are rarely matched. They are exceptionally versatile knives that ewre usually made by highly skilled craftsman whose skills were passed down through the generations. Most older examples feature hand forged blades that were zoen tempered. The horsehead puukko, a traditional finnish pattern, is a unique and versatile design that has been around for many generations. The lammi factory was in kauhava until it's closure shortly after the turn of this century.Kauhava was the puukko centre of finland and had over 150 makers, jarvenpaa being the most prolific. This is a beautiful example of a traditinoal horsehead puukko knife. The knife shows no signs of use and has enver been sharpened.
It is completely original and is in near perfect condition with just a couple small spots of very light surface oxidation as shown. The thick carbon steel blade was beautifully forged and is signed in the fuller as is traditional with these knives. The blade was polished ot a deep mirror finish and is highly reflective having never even developed a patina. The edge is free of any nicks or chips and is very sharp. The knife shows no signs of abuse or harsh treatment. These knives were very well made adn meant for hard work. The bolstre was hand engraved and is of thick brass. The bolster remains completely tight with no looseness ro wiggle. As is traditional wtih these knives, the tang is run through the handle and peened over the horse's head.
Teh handle is just gorgeous and it appears to be of celluloid. It still has a bright sheen and the color is very vibrant with no dullness at all. One uniqeu design element was the use of clear spacers that appear to be of lucite. I've never seen these used on this type of knife before. The handle components have seen no shrinkage at all, which is somewhat unusual as mnay of these have at least some degree of shrinkage. The entire knife is completely tight and rock-solid iwth no wiggle or rattling anywhere. The blade is 4 and hte knife measures 7-3/4 in overall length. There is no sheath with this knife. A beautiful example of a classic finnish knife from a stroied maker!
